Preparing your Landscape for winter
Posted on October 7th, 2024 by John FoegleyHere’s a 9-point checklist for preparing your landscape for winter
1. **Clean Up Debris**
– Remove fallen leaves, branches, and other debris from lawns, flower beds, and pathways to prevent mold and pests over winter.
2. **Trim Trees and Shrubs**
– Prune dead or damaged branches to protect plants from winter winds and snow buildup. Focus on late-summer blooming plants and trees.
3. **Water New Plantings
- Ensure all newly planted trees, shrubs, and perennials are well watered before the ground freezes to help them establish strong roots through the winter.
4. **Apply Fall Fertilizer**
– Use a slow-release fertilizer high in potassium to strengthen grass roots and help lawns recover in spring.
5. **Mulch Garden Beds**
– Add a 2-3 inch layer of mulch to insulate perennials and shrubs, helping to regulate soil temperature and moisture.
6. **Protect Delicate Plants**
– Wrap sensitive trees, shrubs, and evergreens with burlap or use plant covers to shield them from harsh winds and snow.
7. **Drain Irrigation Systems**
– Blow out irrigation lines and garden hoses to prevent freezing and pipe damage. Shut off any exterior faucets.
8. **Plant Spring Bulbs**
– Early fall is the best time to plant bulbs like tulips and daffodils so they can establish roots before the ground freezes.
9. **Winterize Equipment**
– Clean and store garden tools, lawnmowers, and equipment. Drain fuel from mowers and prep for winter storage.
By following this checklist, your landscape will be ready to withstand winter and
emerge healthy in spring.
